A nunnery is too active for Maria and sends her to tutor Colonel von Trapp's seven children in order to show her a different world. The stern colonel, after the death of his beloved wife, had been leading his children like a navy. Maria arrives, and although the children play pranks on her at first, she wins their hearts with her music and warmth. The colonel, who initially disliked Maria, opens his heart to her when he hears the children singing the songs she has taught them. Gradually, he falls in love with Maria, but the Colonel has an affair with Baroness Schrader. Maria, troubled by her own love affair, flees back to the convent, but unafraid, she turns her attention back to reality and returns to the Colonel. They are married, but soon Austria comes under Nazi rule, and the colonel, refusing to serve in Hitler's navy, plans to flee the country. After performing at the Salzburg Festival, the family escapes Austria with the help of a convent and flees to Switzerland.
